Filtration of edible oil/vegetable oils and fats

Filtration is a key process step in the edible/vegetable oil industry. The presence of gums, slimes and gels requires experience in filtration. Knowledge in combination with creativity is the key to success in solving filtration problems. Filtration Group has more than 50 years experience in filtration of edible oils. More than 5000 filters have been sold to the edible oil industry so far. The filtration steps in processing edible/vegetable oil and fats after mechanical and/or solvent extraction are listed below. On the next page a flow chart with all process steps and the filtration steps is shown. For all of these filtration steps Filtration Group can offer you a solution. Application data sheets for the different edible oil processes as well as for the filters used are available.

Refineries and processing plants are automated to a large extent and this requires reliable and easy-to-automate equipment. The operation should be simplified, operational faults avoided and above all, a well-defined process should be achieved.

The pre-treatment of the filter, filtration, and cleaning of the filter takes place in a semi or fully automatic mode and no intensive labor is required to open and/or close a filter in order to discharge the filter cake and get the filter back into operational condition.

Filtration of Cocoa butter

Cocoa powder is used for chocolate milk or as a topping on hot drinks. Cocoa powder is also the ingredient that makes the difference between brown and white chocolate!

Cocoa butter is used for the production of chocolate as well. Cocoa butter melts around 36°C (97°F) and gives chocolate the smoothness and the characteristic that it melts in your mouth.

Cocoa butter is also used in cosmetics. Especially in ointments and lip balm.

 

Cocoa butter filtration, why is it needed.

 

  • Cocoa butter still contains varying amounts of solids
  • Crude cocoa butter typically still contains 0,2 – 0,5% cocoa powder
  • Our unique Cricketfilter® technology can take out all the powder
  • Powder (slurry) from Cricketfilter® is sent back to the presses
  • Clean butter is cooled and packed in solid blocks

 

The basic filtration cycles in cocoa butter filtration are:

 

  1. Thickening filtration of cacao butter
  2. Filling
  3. Recirculation
  4. Filtration
  5. Backwashing
  6. Sedimentation
  7. Partial emptying
  8. Slurry discharge

 

Cocoa butter has to be clear to meet the quality requirements.

 

Cocoa butter filtration was one of the first Cricketfilter® applications in 1988. The Cricketfilter® is a pressure filter with a large specific filtration area due to the shape of the filter elements. The Cricketfilter® is unique because of its patented filter elements, which allow discharge of the filter cake by back pulsing.

The Cricketfilter® is used for clarification of cacao butter, directly after the cocoa press. The Cricketfilter® is a proven filter system in this industry and successfully in use at many major cacao producers.

Clarification of cacao butter is thickening filtration. The Cricketfilter® is fed by a top feed. At the end of the filtration cycle, the filter cake is back pulsed and sediments into the filter cone. The cylindrical part of the filter is emptied via the partial drain. Thereafter the cake slurry is drained through the bottom valve. The cake slurry is sent back to the feed tank before the cacao press, avoiding any product loss.

Molten sulphur filtration

Most sulphur is used for the production of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Before elemental sulphur can be fed to the contact process, typically with a vanadium catalyst, it needs to be purified. If sulphur is filtered in a molten sulphur process the maintenance interval of the sulphur burners, catalyst beds, and pipe reactors is significantly improved. This results in considerably lower maintenance costs.


A molten sulphur filter system typically consists of a two stage filtration system. This system consists of a horizontal pressure leaf filter followed by a polishing/safety cartridge filter.


Filtration Group has developed Horizontal Pressure Leaf - Retractable Bundle and Retractable Shell type filters for sulphur filtration. Key characteristics of these filter models are a big filtration surface, easy to clean filter plates, and a heating jacket in order to maintain the high process temperature.An additional cartridge filter is placed downstream of the horizontal pressure leaf filter.

Filtration of sugar and sweeteners

Salt bath cleaning filters for cheese

The SBCF is a special Cricketfilter® for the conditioning of salting baths in cheese production. The Cricketfilter® is a pressure filter with a large specific filtration area due to the shape of the filter elements. The Cricketfilter® is unique because of its patented filter elements, which allow discharge of the filter cake by back pulsing. It was introduced successfully in the dairy industry ten years ago. This filter can be used with hard and semi hard cheeses, as well as selected soft cheeses such as Mozarella.

 

Cheese is salted in a salt bath with a salt concentration of typically 18 - 20 % for hard cheese and 16 - 18 % for soft cheese. This is to improve taste, structure and shelf life.

 

The average residence time in the salt bath is:

  • 3-5 days for e.g. Emmentaler
  • 1-3 days for other hard cheeses
  • Only several hours for Mozzarella

 

The salt bath needs to be cleaned from time to time because it gets contaminated by bacteria, yeast, molds, proteins and small particles of cheese. The salt bath must be very clean and hygienic to produce cheese of high quality. Cleaning the salt bath can be done by either heating or filtration. We recommend to filter the salt bath because:

 

  • Chemically conditioning the salt bath is not allowed.
  • UV disinfection is not successful on a large scale
  • Centrifuging will give problems due to corrosion. Spare parts for the centrifuge are very expensive.

 

If you clean the salt bath by heating it, you will have problems with the cheese quality because:

 

  • The conditions within the bath will vary.
  • Pasteurizing with heating systems will give problems due to corrosion.
  • Also heating systems are very costly to operate.

 

Without filtration:

  • The salt diffusion is slower and less predictable.
  • The cleaning expenditure is very high.
  • Yeasts and bacteria will grow and cause quality problems and subsequent complaints.
  • The taste will vary.

 

Renewing the salt bath is very expensive and will cause loss of production.
We have made salt bath filters within a wide range, for salt baths from 60 to 4.000 m³. It is possible to filter salt bath volumes up to 8.000 m³ with just one Cricket Filter.
